Preparing for Your First Visit to an Orthopedic Center

Published · Updated

Preparing for Your First Visit to an Orthopedic Center

Whether you have an orthopedic injury, chronic pain, or a musculoskeletal system problem that requires treatment, your primary care physician will likely refer you to an orthopedic center.

An orthopedic center is a medical facility where orthopedic doctors diagnose, treat, and prevent injuries and diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system (muscles, joints, bones, cartilage, and tendons). While the first visit to an orthopedic center can be a relief because you will soon be on your way to addressing the painful and uncomfortable signs of your orthopedic problem, it can also be stressful and confusing because you don’t know what to expect and how to prepare.

Here are some easy tips, which you can follow to prepare for your first visit to an orthopedic center and get the most out of your first appointment.

Tip 1: Find Out About the Orthopedic Center

Firstly, find out the basics about the orthopedic center. Where is it located, what time should you arrive for your appointment, and where can you park if you’re going to drive? Also, find out if there is any need for you to bring your medical referral or insurance card with you.

Since most orthopedic center offers patient education as well as general medical information and guidance, it’s a good idea to check their sites to prepare for your visit. You can also call their staff to ask about your visit-related concerns.

Tip 2: Assemble Your Related Documents

Your documents can help your orthopedic doctor get a good grasp of your overall health. So, gather all the documents that you think will be helpful to your orthopedic doctor. For instance, you may bring:

  • Your government-issued identification card
  • Insurance card
  • Copies of your past medical record
  • Results of your lab tests, x-rays, and other imaging studies
  • Claim number if it’s a worker’s compensation injury
  • If you have had surgery before, a copy of your operation report
  • If you’re seeing a physical therapist, a progress letter from the physical therapist
  • A list of medications, herbs, and supplements you’re taking
  • A list of things or medications you’re allergic to

Tip 3: Come Prepared for Physical Evaluation

Many orthopedic problems require your doctor to perform a physical examination. For example, many spine issues and other problems involving the arms and legs require physical evaluation, and you may be asked to undress. So, wear loose and comfortable clothing so that it is easy for you to take off and put on your clothes.

Tip 4: Write Your Questions and Concerns Beforehand

You may have many questions and concerns before you visit the orthopedic center, which you may, possibly, forget during your consultation. So, it’s a good idea to write your concerns (pain, loss of ability, and function) about your condition beforehand.

Also, be prepared to answer your doctor’s question about your condition.
