Physical Therapy in Boynton Beach

Physical therapy uses guided exercise, hands-on treatment and education to reduce pain and help you move, work and play again. At Personalized Orthopedics of the Palm Beaches, our physical therapists and hand therapist work in the same office as our orthopedic physicians and share the same chart, so your therapy follows your diagnosis closely before and after surgery.

Our therapy team is trained in orthopedics, the care of bones, joints, muscles and tendons. Several members have more than 30 years of experience, and together they cover manual therapy, sports rehab, hand therapy, lymphatic therapy and conditioning.

What we treat

Our therapists work with patients who are recovering from injury or surgery, and with those trying to avoid surgery. Common reasons for therapy include:

  • Rehab before and after knee, hip and shoulder replacement
  • Recovery after ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair and arthroscopy
  • Arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis and frozen shoulder
  • Back and neck pain, sciatica and spinal stenosis
  • Hand and wrist injuries, including fractures, tendon injuries and carpal tunnel surgery
  • Balance problems and fall risk
  • Work and sports injuries

How therapy works with your physician

Your physician writes a referral that describes your diagnosis, any surgery and any restrictions. At your first therapy visit, your therapist measures your motion, strength and function, asks about your goals and designs a plan. Most plans combine in-clinic sessions with a home exercise program.

Because therapy happens down the hall, your therapist can ask your surgeon a question the same day, and your physician can see your progress notes at your follow-up visit. Before joint replacement, therapists may see you to build strength ahead of surgery. After surgery, they follow the protocol your surgeon sets and move you forward as healing allows.

Our therapy team also runs the fall prevention program and fall-risk assessments, and works with Dr. Alexandra Adelman on shockwave and MLS laser therapy for some patients.

Insurance and scheduling

Physical therapy is usually covered by Medicare, most commercial PPO plans and workers' compensation when it is medically necessary, subject to your plan's co-pays, deductibles and visit limits. HMO plans require a referral in our office before your visit. Shockwave and MLS laser coverage varies, so ask our team. To schedule, call our office and ask for physical therapy.

Physical Therapy: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a POPB patient to have therapy here?

Our therapy team primarily works with patients of our physicians, which is what allows the shared chart and close coordination. Call our office and ask for physical therapy to check whether you can be scheduled.

How many therapy visits will I need?

It depends on your condition, your goals and your insurance. Some problems improve in a few weeks, while rehab after joint replacement or ACL reconstruction often lasts several months. Your therapist will give you an estimate after your first visit.

What is hand therapy?

Hand therapy is specialized rehab for the hand, wrist and elbow. Elise Burger, OTR, makes custom splints and guides exercises after hand injuries and surgery, working directly with Dr. Jennifer Tucker.

Should I do therapy before joint replacement?

For many patients, yes. Building strength and learning your exercises before surgery can make the first weeks of recovery easier. Your surgeon will tell you whether it is right for you.

What should I wear to therapy?

Wear comfortable clothes that let the therapist see and move the area being treated, such as shorts for a knee, and supportive shoes. Bring your referral, insurance card and a list of your medications.
