What It Feels Like to Have Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee arthroplasty, also known for successful recovery of function and strength, aims to relieve pain, deformity, balance problems, and more. It is estimated that almost one million people have knee replacement surgery annually in the United States.

Let’s talk about what it feels like to have knee replacement surgery and where you can go in Boynton Beach, FL, for effective pain management.

Discomfort And Other Symptoms After Knee Replacement Surgery

Patients expect pain relief from arthritis, which prompts them to have knee arthroplasty. In the long term, modern knee replacement surgery often accomplishes that treatment goal.

The orthopedic surgeon removes the degraded portions of the upper and lower leg bones and their associated cartilage. The doctor replaces them with ceramic, plastic, or metal prosthetics which mimic the actual knee joint in form and function. Typically, knee replacement is done with the benefit of general anesthesia so that you will be comfortable throughout the procedure.

However, that functionality comes with a post-operative price, namely, pain, swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the immediate postoperative period.  Your doctor will prescribe pain medications, and also, you will have your leg positioned straight and elevated and wear compression stockings. In the hospital, you will have a continuous passive motion machine on your operated leg to stimulate circulation, decrease swelling and prevent blood clots.

Physical Therapy: An Integral Part of Knee Replacement Surgery Recovery

To reduce uncomfortable symptoms, your occupational or physical therapist will begin your ambulation right in the hospital shortly after surgery. You’ll use assistive devices, bracing and a walker or crutches, to improve your strength and balance.

After you return home (a two- to three-day hospital stay is average), you will continue PT for many weeks to months. You will work on stretching, mobility, balance, flexibility, and practical tasks, such as stair climbing, toileting, bathing, and getting in and out of the car. Driving is postponed until your orthopedic surgeon OKs it, and most people take a couple of months off from work to recover.

The One-year Post-op Mark

Frankly, pain is a natural part of rehab after knee arthroplasty. You will be encouraged to gradually increase your level of daily exercise to include walking, a great benefit for your new joint, pain relief, and overall endurance and strength.

By the first anniversary of your knee replacement surgery, many patients enjoy the benefits of a fully functional knee joint. Most people return to the previously stopped or limited activities because of pain and balance problems.

However, many patients report that their operated knees are different from their natural ones. Tiredness can persist after strenuous exercise, so moderation is key to returning to the workplace, participating in sports, and resuming household tasks.
